Despite the racism and prejudice pointed in the direction of Felinids, since receiving their Civil rights in 2187, plenty hold high ranking jobs on stations and ships spread mainly throughout the middle systems. Studying any social behavior quickly reveals the tendency for like attracts like, especially in the case of the Felinids. They are often seen only spending time with one another in any particular crew and may continue to for some time. Despite their predisposition to themselves, they are still present everywhere that humans are. Despite their history of civil rights abuses, they much prefer to associate with humans more than any of the other species, not because they are scared of them, but simply because they do not know them as well.

The predecessors to the Felinids were nothing more than human beings with too much money or time on their hands. From their birthplace in the Wolf 359 star system and across the galaxy, some niche groups of humans couldn’t help but fall in love with the minor genetic modifications which led to human-feline hybrids. Many don’t share this sentiment, however, and as such Felinids have gone through a lot of racial prejudice in the few decades they’ve been around.

Felinids, anatomically, are identical to humans aside from their ears and added tail. The tail is connected to the base of the spine and protrudes just below the small of their back. It’s been discovered the presence of their tail actually does in fact aid in their balance, proving the adage true of a cat always landing on their feet. In place of human ears on the side of the head, instead are two feline ears atop the head skewed slightly from center. They are much more sensitive than human ears and thus easily damaged by loud noise.

Some unfortunate side effects of the genetic modification, be it given to a chosen human or passed down to their offspring are: Sensitivity to theobromine, a chemical most commonly found in chocolate, can sometimes lead to nausea, vomiting, and can even be poisonous in large enough quantities. Newly developed aquaphobia or fear of bodies of water are common among felinids. Changes in speech patterns have also been documented but not proven to be a side effect of felinid genes. It is widely regarded that the Felinid dialect, the colloquially referred “Nyaspeak” is not a development of genetics, but instead a development of culture.

Names for Felinids are just as varied, simple or complex as human names. (If you name yourself Mittens or some other stereotypical cat name, you know what you’re getting into) Felinids tend to find each other wherever they may be, finding solidarity as many other species do in others of their own kind. They range in personality much like humans but more prevalent personalities tend to be cheerful, reserved, or impatient.

Felinids come about due to two circumstances; you’ve either gone and gotten yourself a genetic cosmetic surgery for your own purposes, or you were born one. Felinids aren’t always born to felinid parents as the cosmetic surgery are recessive traits but can still be passed down from parent to child even if the child isn’t born a felinid. This can lead to families going through a few generations before a felinid is born to human parents.

Felinids have only recently been recognized as a separate species from humans, becoming protected under the Species Equality Act of 2187, and as such are allowed the opportunity to become higher members of society. Though this hasn’t settled homogeneously across all of humanity, leaving them to struggle alongside the rest of the alien species to gain a foothold under Federation control.

Plenty rise to the occasion, succeeding where others didn’t and taking up responsibility and proving to be productive members of society. But where there is a demographic, there will be outliers and extremes. Some felinids fall under every trope and expectation imaginable and are rarely ever received well by station or ship crew.
