Apids are a race of bipedal bees from the jungle planet of Saltu. Due to their large bodies, they have lost the ability to fly, but can dash short distances.

History

Apids are a very recently discovered race. The first contact with them comes from a botanical NT expedition to a jungle-covered planet. They are seemingly related to space bees, but a test of their genome has shown that they bear no real biological resemblance to species used aboard SS13, and the race naming is simply a coincidence due to the first contact.

Apid society was somewhat primitive, with having only just taken off to expand throughout their solar system. This contact, happening well after the Species Equality Act was passed, gave Nanotrasen the opportunity to uplift another species into the Federation though the first contact put quite a hold on those plans.

They were first contacted in their own home system in which immediately Nanotrasen was responsible for causing a diplomatic incident. Researchers exploring the edges of the Delphic Expanse had bluespace jumped into the middle of an Apid military training exercise. Having panicked, the researchers called to a nearby Nanotrasen outpost for military reinforcement. The ensuing conflict is now referred to as 'Incident Report No. 4431’ and requires C3 access to read in full.

After the NTPR’s impressive stunt to end the war the Apids declared against humanity, a Non-Aggression Pact was formed and the two began an exchange of culture and information. Eventually their inclusion in the Federation became a reality however their participation is minimal due to their societal structure though rarely a liason can be seen aboard a Nanotrasen vessel.

Gameplay

Apids are an optional playable race. They attack with slashes from their stingers, but don’t deal any extra damage. They’re able to dash a short distance using their wings and can craft honeycombs using sugar. These honeycombs can be broken into wax, used to make wax floortiles. However, they take more burn, toxin, and stamina damage, as well as passing out in the cold and when exposed to smoke.

Random names for Apids always have the first name starting with a “B,” and the last names seem to be many different flower types.

Note that as an Apid, the AI does not consider you human and is not obligated to listen to you and an Asimov AI will often respond lethally should they find you harming a human, however, this also means the AI can allow you to put yourself into harm's way in a positive manner, such as opening an airlock exposed to space to save someone.

You can speak in Apidite, a language understood by Apids (as well as silicons and the Curator) by using the language menu. To speak on the radio in Apidite, use the radio code while speaking the language.

Roleplay

Apid names will almost always start with the letter “B” and be followed by a last name resembling if not the scientific name of some kind of flower.

Almost every single Apid found in service of Whiterapids and/or Nanotrasen are FEMALE warriors. It is extraordinarily rare to see any other kind of Apid outside of their home system, especially males. All Apids come from Saltu and none are born elsewhere in the galaxy.

All Apids are found in some department that requires combat or violence, such as Pilot, Muni Techs, Security Officers, or Military Police. If a worker or drone Apid somehow ends up aboard a Nanotrasen vessel, they’ll always be found at a desk job or service job like Chef, ATC, Cargo Tech, Botanist, or Janitor.

Apids are usually quick to aggression but not anger. This means having no issue pushing others out of their way, taking what they need without asking, Being extraordinarily productive without direction and obeying orders to their letter in the most efficient and direct manner. Despite this behavior, they tend to be curt and to the point, and mild mannered. They rarely rise to anger but instead simply work around or through those that get in their way.
